Behaviour intervention aims to develop and implement interventions which lead to skill development and improvements in behaviours of concern. Different providers use different approaches to behaviour intervention so it is important to understand the approach to select the best service for your child and your family.

At Moving Mountains Therapy, our behaviour intervention involves:

  • Understanding the underlying causes of behaviours of concern for the child (the WHY?).

  • Implementing strategies and building skills to improve these behaviours.

This is based on the assumption that there is a reason that a child is engaging in a behaviour of concern and if we understand this, then we can support the child and their family better.

This means that we first spend time assessing, observing and asking, in order to best understand the WHY? This could include skills that are difficult for the child, environmental factors, their wants or needs and/or learning. Once we have this understanding, we can create a tailored program that addresses their unique needs to best support the child and their family.

Why do we use this approach?

  • Effective: applying evidence-based procedures and strategies AND tailoring them to the individual means we can achieve the best results.

  • Builds skills: this approach identifies and then builds skills for children so they can reach their potential, rather than ONLY focusing on reducing behaviours of concern.

  • Empower: caregivers are empowered to understand their children and taught to use effective strategies and children are empowered by learning new skills and increasing their engagement in what they want and need to do.
