Behaviour intervention aims to develop and implement interventions which lead to skill development and improvements in behaviours of concern. Different providers use different approaches to behaviour intervention so it is important to understand the approach to select the best service for your child and your family.

Our behaviour therapists use the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis in a compassionate and family-centred way, aiming to increase the wellbeing and participation of children and their families. This intervention focuses on building children's skills to increase engagement and reduce behaviours of concern.

Behaviour Therapy

How do you know if your child needs Behaviour Therapy?

  • Does your child have frequent emotional outbursts or tantrums that are hard to calm?

  • Is it challenging for your child to follow basic routines or instructions at home or in public?

  • Does your child struggle to manage frustration, becoming upset easily when things don’t go their way?

  • Have you noticed any aggressive behaviors, like hitting, biting, or pushing, when they’re around others?

  • Does your child have difficulty playing or interacting appropriately with other children?

  • Do transitions, like leaving the house or moving from one activity to another, often lead to conflict or upset?

  • Does your child have intense interests that seem to interfere with daily life?

  • Have teachers, caregivers, or family members expressed concerns about your child’s behaviour in social settings?

What do these areas include?

Engagement

Supporting the development of skills for engaging in both necessary tasks (like academic activities and daily routines) and leisure pursuits that foster independence and joy in preferred activities. This includes recognizing and honoring each child's interests and strengths.

Transitioning

Increasing the skills required to transition from and to different activities and environments at a comfortable pace, acknowledging individual differences in coping with change.

Relinquishing

Teaching strategies to gracefully finish and transition from preferred activities when necessary, such as during bedtime, while respecting the child's need for preparation and support.

Collaboration

Building collaborative skills in both children and their caregivers and/or educators to work together as a cohesive team, ensuring that everyone’s perspectives are valued and that the best outcomes are achieved for all.

Self Advocacy

Encouraging children to recognise their own needs and express them confidently, such as asking for help or clarification instead of resorting to challenging behaviours.

Tolerance

Fostering skills to manage and adapt to the changes and unpredictability of everyday life, promoting resilience and emotional regulation in diverse situations.

  • Effective: applying evidence-based procedures and strategies AND tailoring them to the individual means we can achieve the best results.

  • Builds skills: this approach identifies and then builds skills for children so they can reach their potential, rather than ONLY focusing on reducing behaviours of concern.

  • Empower: caregivers are empowered to understand their children and taught to use effective strategies and children are empowered by learning new skills and increasing their engagement in what they want and need to do.
